Health Academy Courses

Medical Science and Terminology

Medical Science & Terminology

Medical Science & Terminology is a sophomore level course, which focuses on developing a broad-spectrum foundation of knowledge about the health care field and career options. Students examine health care systems, basic anatomy and physiology, medical terminology, human development and behavior, communications in health care, ethics, confidentiality, teamwork, and asepsis and disease control. Students are certified in cardiopulmonary resuscitation and basic first aid and learn beginning level health care skills. Medical Science & Terminology includes health care related speakers and field trips, and is a required course upon entrance into the Oakmont Health Careers Academy.

Advanced Medical Science/DE

Advanced Medical Science & DE Health Careers - Intro and Concentrator CTE Pathway Course

Junior Health Academy students will learn basic anatomy and physiology, medical abbreviations, basic chemistry, and physics. Students will also research job functions, career forecasts and educational preparation required for a variety of positions. Skills training will become more focused on particular job functions. They will learn many clinical skills such as how to put on sterile gloves, proper hand washing techniques, making a bed, ambulating a patient with a walker, transferring a patient from bed to chair, and how to complete a four person transfer. Career exploration occurs primarily through regularly scheduled visits to observe 9 different departments in local health care facilities. After a formal mock interview, they will begin their clinical placement with up to three weeks in a selected department. Students are certified in cardiopulmonary resuscitation and basic first aid.

Hospital Practicum

Hospital Practicum is an elective course for seniors in the Health Careers Academy, and is designed to provide these students with intensive technical training and experiences. Students will be assigned to one area of healthcare training. There will be a clinical supervisor from the healthcare field in each area who will take responsibility for instruction, training, application experiences, and feedback and performance evaluation. Students will be engaged in direct, on-the-job training for three hours each day. This course is offered in the spring term.

Medical Trends Seminar

DE Medical Terminology - Capstone CTE Pathway Course

Medical Terminology is the senior level technical course of the Health Careers Academy. Medical terminology will prepare the student to explore the fundamental elements of medical language, including prefixes, suffixes, roots, and combined forms that constitute many medical terms. In addition, essential acronyms and abbreviations are studied to help the student navigate the healthcare language and communicate more efficiently with future healthcare professionals.
