Drop off and Pick up Procedures - Parking Lot
In order to improve the safety and traffic flow in and around the Oakmont parking lot, there are a couple of issues that need to be communicated. We thank you in advance for taking the time to review this message.
Back Parking Lot:
The back parking lot (bus entrance at Parkview) of the school is not a drop off or pick up location for students. That area is reserved for bus pick up and drop off and families of students with disabilities and/or serious medical needs who have received pre-approval from the school to enter the back parking lot. Please refrain from parking in that lot or using it as your drop off/pick up spot.
Handicap Parking Stalls:
Please do not park in the handicap parking stalls if you do not have a valid handicap placard posted in or on your vehicle. Those who do park in those spots without proper identification/documentation will be cited a parking ticket and a fine of $392.50 will be imposed (RMC 11.20.220).
Residential/Neighborhood Drop Offs/Pick Ups and Parking Permits:
The neighborhoods, especially off of Daisy Court, Parkview Drive or Crestmont Avenue are areas where a student can be dropped off or picked up. We ask that our families please consider using these areas instead of the front parking lot. Students can use the light at Parkview to safely cross Cirby Way. Please do not block driveways or streets while waiting to pick up your student.
If you do not have a parking permit, please do not park your vehicle where signs state that you need to have a permit in that residential/neighborhood area. Those who park in those neighborhood streets without a proper permit are in violation of RMC 11.20.460. A $62.50 fine will be imposed. Neighborhoods to the west and north of Oakmont require permits. Most streets to the east of Oakmont do not require a permit.
Right Turn into the Main Parking Lot:
When traveling east on Cirby Way approaching Oakmont High School there are two straight eastbound lanes of vehicle traffic. The lane on the left is considered the number one lane and the lane to the right is considered the number two lane. Both lanes are straight eastbound traffic lanes, meaning vehicles can proceed eastbound past Oakmont High School if the driver chooses to.
If you are entering the Oakmont High School parking lot, you can ONLY make a right turn into the parking lot entrance from the number two (right) lane which is the lane closest to the sidewalk curb. You cannot make a right turn lane into the Oakmont High School parking lot entrance from the number one (left) lane. The number one (left) lane is designated for vehicles to only travel straight eastbound. Drivers who do turn right into the Oakmont High School parking lot from the number one (left) lane are in violation of CA Vehicle Code 22100(a), and may be subject to a moving citation, a fine, traffic school fees, and a point on their DMV driving record. In turn, vehicle insurance premiums may also increase and/or drivers licenses may be taken until the driver’s driving skills can be re-evaluated by DMV. Most importantly it is not safe for our students, families, and community.
Left Turn into the Main Parking Lot:
When traveling west on Cirby Way approaching Oakmont High School on your left, there are two straight westbound lanes of vehicle traffic. There is also a lane in the middle of the road that splits the eastbound and westbound traffic lanes. The middle lane is marked with yellow dots. This lane can be used to either turn left or right into a parking lot or driveway.
While stopped in the middle lane and waiting for your turn to turn left into the primary Oakmont High School parking lot entrance, you cannot turn left into the driveway that has a large sign “DO NOT ENTER.” That driveway has the sign clearly posted so that you simply do not enter because vehicles exiting the Oakmont High School parking lot will be exiting that driveway to get back on to Cirby Way. Although it is very tempting to enter the parking lot through that exit, it is illegal and more importantly, very unsafe to do so. Drivers who do enter the driveway that cars use to exit the parking lot are in violation of CA Vehicle Code 21461(a). Those issued citations will face fines, may incur points on their driver's license, and their auto insurance rates may increase.
If you are using the front parking lot for drop off or pick up, please do not stop the flow of traffic, instead pull all the way over and up to the end of the pool area to let your student out or into your car.
Thank you for considering the safety of Oakmont students and families by following the above requests.
