Common Questions asked of Counselors: 2 yr and 4 yr College Information
What do I need to do for entering into a Junior College?
Applications for most CA Community Colleges open in the Fall of your senior year for admission to the fall term of the next school year. For Spring admissions, please view the individual websites of the colleges you'd like to attend. Information about a college's specific requirements and application process can also be found on their website.
You do not need to take the SAT or ACT for admissions to CA Community College, but some community colleges may waive assessment tests based on SAT or ACT scores. Check the college's website for more details.
Please apply for the FASFA (no matter family income) to be eligible for the "Two Years Free" program. FASFA opens in October of each year during 1st semester senior year and should be completed by March 2nd of the following year. Missing the March 2nd deadline may result in ineligibility for the "Two Years Free" program.
When do I apply to 4-year colleges?
CSU October 1-November 30 https://www2.calstate.edu/apply
UC November 1-30 www.universityofcalifornia.edu/admissions
Private universities have differing deadlines – check their websites for information.
Schools that use the “Common Application” can be accessed by going to www.commonapp.org
Do I need to send a transcript with my UC and CSU application?
No, the UC and CSU applications DO NOT require a transcript with your application. However make sure to check the requirements of private schools regarding transcripts and letters of recommendation.
Do I need to send letters of recommendation for college?
Not for UC or CSU schools (with the exception of some specific majors). Private university and scholarship applications will typically require one or more letters of recommendation (check specifics). Ask people who know you well, and give them at least three weeks notice. Provide a resume or informational facts sheet to help secure a better recommendation.
When do I find out if I am accepted?
Typically, most colleges notify students in the spring, with most admissions letters sent to students in the month of March. Timelines can vary widely from school to school. Check the admissions website of the schools you applied to, as many schools post notifications with expected dates for admissions decisions.
When do I have to make a final decision regarding acceptance?
By May 1, in most cases. Read and respond to requests for information carefully when you receive your acceptance letters!
How can I find out about scholarships?
Scholarships are posted on the Oakmont College & Career Center website. Apply to the financial aid departments at the colleges you are seriously considering. Go to websites such as www.fastweb.com for more information.
Can you tell me more about financial aid?
Get your FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid) PIN in your junior year.
All students should apply for financial aid regardless of GPA or family income level. Much of financial aid goes unawarded because students do not apply. Financial aid is given for different reasons and can be used at all different types of colleges: 4-year, community and career technical. Students should apply for financial aid starting October of their senior year of high school.
What if I want to play sports at a Division I or Division II college?
